Homesick is a term given to a person that experiencing a longing for one's home during a period of absence from it. Being separated away from family and close friends while away to study especially university are most likely the biggest factor that lead to homesickness. Moving for university is a big transition, whether you come 400, 000 kilometres far from home through air or even just half an hour driving down the road from home. Homesickness usually will heal as time pass by, but to wait till the time flies, actions need to be taken to cure this homesickness so it will not turn into a cancerous illness that can be the reason to a person’s studies to go down to the river.
First way to deal with this homesickness is, be brave. Feeling shy, awkward, or vulnerable is a common side-effect of homesickness. If you don’t take any risks, you will miss out on experiences that could help you adjust to your new situation. Try accepting invitations, even if you won’t know many people at whatever you’ll be doing. Register yourself into university clubs and even programs. From this, you will know the place and the people better. You will not feel left out thus will make you always feels like home even you are abroad. You might not make a lot of friends if you are so shy. But it will not become any problem as you will become more comfortable socializing as time goes on. You have proved to yourself that you can boost your self-confidence. Slowly, but surely.
Next, find you a friend. As the main cause for this problem is being away from home, family and also friends, a person should be able to find themselves some new friends in the beginning to kill the boredom. Friends function as your family that are not related through blood. Having good friends benefit a lot. Besides of knowing new people, it is also proven that having good friends also will always keeping us in line. We tend to do stupid things when we are alone. With the presence of friends, they will always remind us and advise us from doing something that could make us regret later.
Talking about your feelings with someone also can cure homesickness bit by bits. Sharing about what you are feeling and experiencing can help you deal with your homesickness. To make this happen, you must find a trusted to talk with. A close good friend would be a great listener, but, if you did not make it to have a trusted friend, you could always talk to a counsellor or even a mental health professional. They would love to help you by giving you a sympathetic ear and, often, advice about how to cope with your feelings. Seeking help from professionals is not the sign of weak. It is the sign that you have the strength to admit yourself that you need help. And it is a sign of courage and good self-care, not something to be embarrassed about.
Other than that, keeping with family and friends back home is also crucial in keeping your homesickness under control. Talking with your loved ones back at home can help you feel supported and connected, which is important for adjusting to a new place. Self-confidence and self-reliance need to be develop to beat homesickness effectively. But then, focusing too much on your loved ones in another place away from them can make your homesickness worsen. On this technological millennium era, you can always spend a time on social networking sites such as, Skype, Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to connect with friends and see what they are up to. But in the meantime, do not always think about the people you leave back at home, might that you do not have time to make a new one.
Then, find a new hobby or interest. To find happiness, we have to make it. Make your days happy with the things that are interesting and fun. Look out for your favourite things or even activities to do on your leisure time. Learn to master those things. You also can join into related clubs and association to make it something useful and beneficial for your future. This also will help you to make new friends that share the same interest as you and you can always change new ideas and new knowledge on the things. Expending your circle will help you to survive.
Last but not least, research has shown that exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Thus get plenty of exercise also helps a lot on battling homesickness. Both anxiety and depression which are the common side of homesickness could be helped by endorphins. As homesickness may lead to increased feelings of sickness like frequent headaches or colds, exercise can boost up back your immune system and make you a healthier you for your studies and also future
In a nutshell, many ways can be followed to help homesickness from spreading uglier. Prevention is better than cure, it is recommended that people who experiencing homesickness to follow the suggestion before it becoming worsen.
